The Great Coin Roll Hunt ... an Update

Things have been busy in The Great Coin Roll Hunt. On Wednesday night I went through my first box of half dollars. In the box I found 5 90% silver halves (3 x 1964, 2 x 1964D) and 12 40% silver halves (1965, 2 x 1966, 6 x 1967, 2 x 1968D, 1969D). No proofs or older coins, maybe next week when box #2 arrives. I also went through two boxes of dimes with 4 silver dimes in them (1964D, 1946, 1951, 1963D) and two boxes of nickels with 1 war time nickel in it and 4 variants I needed for my album.

Although my morning's find doesn't beat this awesome find I'm quite happy with it. Going through a box of pennies this morning I found an elusive 1972S penny. Now if I could only find a 1968S penny my Lincoln Memorial cents will be done and I can concentrate on finding Wheats and Canadians!

I'm also keeping my eye out for Canadian coins. I've found quite a few of them in the rolls I've hunted. To better organize my collection I got a set of albums for them from Brent-Krueger. I was very pleased with their service. The Dansco Albums are of higher quality and have a different mounting system, but I think these are the best Canadian albums available.

Today my secret can donor left about a dollar's worth of cans in my office. The day is starting out just fine.

Found: 2 pennies (1 at Burger King, 1 in the hallway at work)

Redeemed: $5.50

The 1972S was the last penny from the 70's that I found as well. It is a tough one to nail down. I lucked out and found the 1968S early. I have 27 extra 1968D's, but no extra S's. If I find one I'll let you know.

I still have three pennies that I need to finish the Memorial set (1959, 1961, 1962, and 1968). The anoying thing is that none of them are that rare!

Very interesting. Neat to see a difference based on area of the country. Makes me think when I'm out west later this year I should do some hunting. Wonder if you'll find a difference in nickels, dimes, etc. too?

I would bet that would be the case. No matter what the year I find tons of D coins and only a small number of no mint mark coins.

Wow, I just went through a few handfuls of coins and picked out a 1961 and 2 1962 pennies, plus a 1948 and 1956 Jefferson Nickel. I'm sure you'll get them soon, Chris.

Best,

Jim

Roll hunting is a great way for people on a budget to build a collection.

I've found that the easiest set to complete is the clad FDR dimes. On average I can put one and sometimes two sets together from one box.

With that thought in mind, buy two Harris folders from Hobby Lobby for $4.20(normally $3 but every 3 months they run their coin supplies 30% off).
Then roll hunt both folders to completion (hopefully in one box).
Each set takes ~75 dimes so you're out a total of $15 in change.
Now sell the second set on eBay... Usually sets like this will grab somewhere around $15.

If all goes well you'll have a complete FDR set of 75 dimes in an album and it will have cost you the price of the folders!
