Good Boxes, Bad Run

The past few days coin hunts have gone both ways, good and bad. The boxes were great, the bank runs were bad.

I searched 9,363 half dollars and came up with fifteen 90% silver halves (1942D, 1963, 11 x 1964, 1964D),fifty-two 40% silver halves (3 x 1965, 9 x 1966, 17 x 1967, 20 x 1968D, 3 x 1969D), and two proof halves (1985S, 1992S). The 1942D was one I need for my album and it was right on top, a first for me. I've never opened a box and seen the reverse of a Walker looking back at me. Hope to do again! The bank runs I did on Friday were disappointing. I'm getting sick of being in someone's wake. I'm just not sure how many such runs are left in me or worth doing (the remaining banks that I haven't hit and are in my general area are shrinking though).

I also looked through 4,480 hand rolled quarters and found eight Canadians, one Bermuda 25¢, two Cayman Islands 25¢, and one US penny (an extra). The Cayman Islands quarters were a first for me.

300 hand rolled dimes, 280 hand rolled nickels, and 250 hand rolled pennies produced one Canadian dime, two Canadian nickels, and nine Canadian pennies.

Found: 1 penny (outside Pet Smart), 1 dime (at Sovereign Bank), 1 foreign coin (a UK new penny at Sovereign Bank)

Redeemed: $8.70

HI,

I am new to coin roll hunting. From what I have read on your site, you go thru a LOT of $ every time you look for coins. 9,363 half dollars?! Wow! How do you get the banks in your area to give you so many coins? Are you also Canadian from all the Canadian coins you supposedly get?

Hey. Good questions.

Sometimes I get boxes of coin from the bank. To get those I have had to get them at a large bank where they have boxes to spare or a small one where they specificly ordered them for me. Othertimes I get hand rolled coin. The banks I frequent are eager to get rid of their hand rolled coin because they don't give it away to customers generally and have to pay the armored car service to take it away.

As for Canadian coins it depends a lot on where you live. I live in the US close to the border and there are quite a few Canadian coins in circulation, most stores freely accept them (except quarters for some reason). I've heard that in Michigan there are even more Canadian coins in circulation and in the South West there are virtually none, but there are Mexican coins down there. I have found very few of those up here. The times I searched in WA and CA I found Canadian pennies quite readily.

Thanks for checking out my blog.
